A medida que los donantes internacionales se retiran cada vez más de la cooperación mundial, las organizaciones de base del Sur Global dan un paso al frente con alternativas audaces y sostenibles. Una de ellas es FEM Colombiauna iniciativa impulsada por la comunidad que está transformando la forma en que las comunidades afrocolombianas e indígenas reclaman sus tierras, hacen valer sus derechos y forjan su propio futuro.
El 3 de junio de 2025, Kuja organizó un seminario web en el que nos reunimos con Ana María González, cofundadora de FEM, para mantener una enriquecedora conversación sobre el modelo de desarrollo inclusivo de FEM y su innovador enfoque de la diversificación de la financiación. El seminario web fue un testimonio de cómo el conocimiento localizado y la apropiación comunitaria no solo son caminos viables, sino esenciales.
Tierra, identidad y derechos
El trabajo de FEM está profundamente arraigado en las regiones del Pacífico y el Caribe de Colombia, de gran diversidad étnica y riqueza medioambiental, donde persisten desigualdades sistémicas. Estas zonas registran tasas de pobreza más elevadas, un acceso limitado a la sanidad y la educación y un despojo histórico de tierras. En respuesta, FEM ha ayudado a más de 20.000 personas a conseguir títulos colectivos de propiedad de la tierra, lo que permite a las comunidades proteger sus territorios y preservar su identidad cultural, un principio que denominan "Tierra para siempre".
Pero la visión de FEM va mucho más allá de las victorias legales. Implican a las comunidades a través de la etnoeducación, la etnosalud y la formación de líderes, con especial atención a las mujeres y los jóvenes. Su trabajo combina la defensa legal con la planificación participativa, haciendo que el desarrollo sea integrador y esté profundamente arraigado en las realidades locales.
Convertir los obstáculos en oportunidades
El camino de FEM no ha sido fácil. Muchos financiadores tradicionales consideraban que la organización era "demasiado local", financieramente inviable o geográficamente inconveniente (por tener su sede en Cartagena y no en la capital, Bogotá). Y el sector privado no era un aliado probable, a menudo debido a intereses contrapuestos en torno a la propiedad de la tierra.
En lugar de encogerse ante esta presión, FEM se volvió creativa.
Monetizaron su propio valor, calculando el valor de sus contribuciones voluntarias, la infraestructura de propiedad comunitaria y sus conocimientos culturales únicos.
Pusieron en marcha empresas sociales, atrayendo a inversores ángeles y creando puestos de trabajo para vendedores locales.
Consiguieron un patrocinador fiscal con sede en EE.UU., se financiaron mediante crowdfunding dentro de sus redes y buscaron alianzas Sur-Sur para subvenciones con financiadores que comprendieran su contexto.
FEM también transformó su gobernanza, creando una red de apoyo escalonada de miembros honorarios, asociados y amigos para sostener la recaudación de fondos y la divulgación en la comunidad.
Lecciones para el Sur Global y el mundo
Ana María destacó la importancia de las operaciones ajustadas, el aprendizaje continuo y el espíritu empresarial alineado con la misión. En FEM, la creación de alternativas económicas a través de empresas comunitarias no solo tiene que ver con el dinero, sino también con la dignidad, la resiliencia y la justicia.

Ana Mara es politóloga colombiana y madre de dos hijos. Cofundó FEM (2007), que ha garantizado los derechos territoriales de 20.000 afrocolombianos/as en los últimos 17 años mediante modelos participativos y empresas sociales. Becaria Obama '18. Trabajó en el gobierno de Cartagena, combatiendo el desplazamiento y la explotación. Actualmente, con Voces Nuevas, aboga por la inclusión del Sur Global y un nuevo orden mundial.
