Navigating Change: What we learned from Kuja's first webinar

The aid sector is in a period of transformation, with funding shifts forcing organizations to rethink their strategies. For Kuja, launching our first webinar in the middle of these changes was a lesson in patience, humility, flexibility, and teamwork—qualities that will be essential for navigating this new reality.

Lessons in Patience and Humility

Planning a webinar with people in crisis required more than just logistical preparation—it demanded patience and deep listening. Our panelists were eager to share their experiences and advocate for their projects, but refining their messages to be impactful meant working through difficult conversations. Their willingness to adapt, and our ability to support them through that process, was a reminder that meaningful storytelling in the aid sector requires careful thought and respect.

Flexibility in the Face of Challenges

Technical difficulties are inevitable in virtual events, but Kuja’s experience reinforced the importance of flexibility. Emails went to spam, links didn’t work, calendar invites were misaligned, and panelists faced connectivity issues. In the midst of these challenges, our team problem-solved in real-time, with everyone stepping up without hesitation. The event started late, but the goodwill and professionalism of our panelists and the commitment of attendees—who stayed engaged beyond the scheduled time—proved that community and real human stories matter more than perfection.

Teamwork as a Pillar of Aid Transformation

The challenges of the webinar mirrored the broader upheaval in the aid sector. Many organizations, particularly in the Global South, are being forced to pivot as traditional funding sources shift. Just as our team relied on each other in the moment, local leaders are now looking to their communities and regional networks for support. The ability to collaborate, adapt, and problem-solve collectively is no longer optional—it’s essential for survival in this evolving landscape.

As Kader, one of our panelists, stated during the webinar, African leaders must now take charge of their own future. The traditional structures of aid are being challenged, and as we move forward, we must prioritize partnerships built on shared vision, mutual learning, and sustainable local solutions. Kuja’s first webinar was just the beginning of this conversation, and we are committed to ensuring these lessons shape our work moving forward.
